In the picture to the left I am using a piece of cardboard that has a 1-inch by 3/4-inch window cut in its middle. I place the 1-inch leg of the window so it is perpendicular to the growth rings.

If you count just the early wood rings (darker color rings); keeping in mind that it takes both the early and late wood rings to make one year of growth, you will find that ring count is eight. This is to say that it took the tree eight years to grow one one inch in diameter.

If you look closely near the center of the window you can confidently state that there was little difference in precipitation for a year and half for the growth of the tree in this time. Two early wood and one late wood rings are very close in size.

If this does not make sense please let me know and I will try a different approach.
